On April 10th 2023, the Emmabuntüs Collective is happy to announce the release of the Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5 Alpha 1 update (32 and 64 bits), based on the Debian 12 RC 1 Bookworm distribution and supporting both Xfce and LXQt desktop environments.
This distribution was originally designed to facilitate the reconditioning of computers donated to humanitarian organizations, starting with the Emmaüs communities (which is where the distribution’s name obviously comes from), to promote the discovery of GNU/Linux by beginners, as well as to extend the lifespan of computer hardware, in order to reduce the waste induced by the over-consumption of raw materials.
This new update of our distribution included the latest developments of the Emmabuntüs DE 4 by adding the CTparental control, as well as a script to help install and configure it. This will greatly simplify the deployment of CTparental for the parents who want to protect their children against unsuitable content on the Internet, see our tutorial presenting the parental control.
The utilities Deb-get and its graphical interface Deborah also arrive in this new version and are only available in the 64-bit version. These utilities allow you to install recent applications not present in the official Debian or Ubuntu repositories, such as: Vivaldi, Brave, Discord and even the sulfurous Micro$oft Edge, Teams, Google Chrome, etc.
For this version Alpha 1, the following fixes and improvements have been implemented :

- Added Deb-get et Deborah utilities in 64-bit version
- Fixed apt cache creation
- Used gnome-packagekit from the repository
- GRUB improvement to 1024×768 and message about installing Calamares
- Filezilla in 64-bit version only present on Debian 12
- Removed Childsplay, Omnitux-ligth, Wammu, System-config-samba due to deprecated Python 2
- Disabled HTTPS in normal mode in Firefox
- Disabled insecure default umask (World Readable Files)
